Ectropion is the eversion (falling) of the free edge of the lower eyelid. This produces its exposure and loss of contact with the eyeball. It can affect both the upper and the lower eyelid.

Why does it occur?

The most common causes are: scarring (by burning or trauma), the senile (the most common due to aging of tissues of the eyelid, they get loose and unstructured) and paralysis (after a facial paralysis like Bell's phenomenon)

What symptoms cause ectropion?

The dryness of the exposed portion causes discomfort and redness of the conjunctiva of the eyelid, to varying degrees depending on the severity. The mucous membrane loses its structure and natural moisture where it forms a thicker and rigid layer. The dryness of the cornea and the constant irritation can lead to a predisposition to infections or corneal ulcers.

What is the treatment of ectropion?

After the eye exam, it is always advisable to measure several times the blood pressure at different times in order to exclude that the cause is a sudden rise in blood pressure, and if you are taking the above medications, it is sometimes appropriate to carried out blood test.
