PRELEX, PRESBYOPTIC LENS
EXCHANGE PRESBYOPIA-TIRED SIGHT
PRELEX is a term used to describe lens exchange
with multifocal intraocular lens. While the application of this
technology is new, the surgical techniques employed have proved
to be successful over many years of use.
The cornea (the outside part of the eye) and the crystalline (eye’s
natural lens) work together to focus light that comes into your
eye. The lens, which is flexible when you are younger, becomes
increasingly inflexible as you grow older, often after you have
passed the age of forty. Consequently, you have a difficult time
focusing on objects. This condition is known as presbyopia.
The onset of presbyopia has traditionally
meant that you are relegated to using glasses for clear vision.
What is more, even those individuals who have received laser vision
correction (myopia-hyperopic–astigmatism) will need glasses
or contacts to restore their full range of sight when they are
over forty.
PRELEX offers a solution. PRELEX works on
the lens inside the eye. Consequently, your vision after the procedure
will be stable und unlikely to change over time. In addition,
cataract surgery will not be necessary later in life. The multifocal
lens that is used to replace yours eye´s natural lens will
provide you with clear vision at all distances, giving you little
or no dependence on traditional or progressive bifocal glasses.
Prelex is a modern and advanced technique
to correct the presbyopia. It is made ambulant without hospitalisation
and only a few minutes are necessary for each eye. The treatment
will be made with local anaesthesia. If you have pre-existing
astigmatism the surgeon can try to correct it with an “Arquata
Queratotomy” with micro incision in the corneas border.
The treatment will be made from a corneal micro incision and it
is necessary to use a special apparatus called Phacoemulsificator,
which dissolves the natural lens or crystalline. After that the
multifocal lens will be folded and inserted through the same micro-incision
and will be placed at the best place. The incision is so little
that it does not require stitches after finishing the treatment.
You will go home shortly after the operation
is finished and relax for the rest of the day. Most patients report
improvement in their vision almost immediately after the procedure.
Most patients return to their normal activities within a day or
two.
In 20 % of the cases, patients
need an adjustment dioptres within 2-3 months of the application
of the Excimer Laser. That is because in some patients the computer
biometric calculus of the multifocal lens has to be readjusted
by Laser Excimer because of individual factors. This procedure
is called PRELEX BIOPTIC and the results are excellent.
PRELEX is for those who:
· Want to be less dependent on glasses or contacts for
far and near vision.
· Are outside the corrective range of LASIK and other refractive
procedures.
· May be showing signs of clouding in their natural lens
even though this clouding is not yet interfering with vision.
· Have no health issues affecting their eyes.
Realistic expectations:
It is extremely important to understand
that with multifocal implants you are getting a new “visual
system”. That means that it will naturally take time for
your brain to adjust to a new visual system.
Following PRELEX , it is always told to
the patient that they will see halos around objects, especially
at night, but this situation will become less and less noticeable
being possible that it totally disappears.
The goal of PRELEX surgery is to reduce
or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses. However
you may not achieve the results you desire and your Doctor of
CIMO cannot guarantee that, he only can give you relevant statistics
and in more than 95 % cases the patients are quite happy.
PRELEX uses a multifocal lens.
This is the most effective lens you can find. This lens has been
approved by the FDA for cataract surgery . In our clinic, CIMO
use the ARRAY Allergan SA40 lens, imported from the United States.
